macOS menu bar app

Fire

When the menu bar overflows, fold it away.

Fire sorts menu bar icons into two zones: the main menu bar and the Fire Bar. The icons you rarely need get folded away and come back only when you ask for them.

What it does

Two zones, one drag

Keep the icons you use in the menu bar and drop the rest into the Fire Bar. Drag them in settings — Fire positions the separator itself.

Open with a shortcut

Press ⌥⌘F or click empty space in the menu bar to open the Fire Bar. It closes on an outside click, on Esc, or after five idle seconds.

1.3 MB app, 74 MB resident

No Dock icon — it lives in the menu bar only, light enough to leave running and forget about.

Nothing is recorded

Accessibility and Screen Recording are used only to move icons and read what they look like. Screen contents are never stored or transmitted.

Download

  • macOS 14 Sonoma or later
  • Notarized by Apple, so it opens without a Gatekeeper warning
  • Open the dmg and drag Fire to Applications
  • Accessibility and Screen Recording are required on first launch

Relaunch Fire after granting the permissions. In settings, drag the icons you want folded away into the “Show in Fire Bar” zone and the menu bar sorts itself out.

What's new and improved in Fire.

v0.1.3

2026-08-29

Latest
  • Fixed icons vanishing and reappearing on their own. macOS adds and removes items on its own — the purple screen-recording indicator, for one — and with a full menu bar that pushed the leftmost icon out each time. Fire now measures the space and keeps one slot free.
  • When space runs short, Fire tidies up first. It moves one icon to the Fire Bar before macOS hides one arbitrarily — nothing disappears, it relocates and stays reachable.
  • Added "Show All Temporarily". Tucked-away icons sit off-screen, so you could not ⌘-drag them. The button reveals everything; rearrange them in the menu bar and click Done.

  • Menu bar capacity is now shown, like "About 12 icons fit on this display". On a display without a notch the number goes up on its own.
  • Clearer reason when something isn't visible. When there's no room, ⌘-dragging won't help, so Fire tells you to tuck away another icon instead.
v0.1.22026-08-29
  • Fixed menus opened from the Fire Bar closing on their own after about 1.5 seconds. Fire was opening the menu successfully but misreading the result as a failure, so it sent a second click that closed it.
  • Clicking an icon responds faster. Icons already visible on screen skip an unnecessary rescan.
  • English is now supported. The interface follows your system language.
  • Added a way out when System Settings shows a permission as granted but Fire reports it missing. Click Reset Record next to the permission, then turn it back on.
  • The Settings screen now explains why the "Show in Menu Bar" order cannot be changed from Fire, and exactly what to ⌘-drag where.
v0.1.12026-08-28
  • Automatic updates. Fire tells you when a new version ships, and you can turn it off in Settings.
  • App icon. Fire now shows up properly in Applications and Spotlight.
  • Notarized by Apple. It opens without a warning.
v0.1.02026-08-28
  • First release. Splits your menu bar icons into two sections: the main menu bar and the Fire Bar.
  • Icons you tuck away stay clickable from the Fire Bar panel.
  • After applying a layout, Fire measures the menu bar again to confirm it, and retries when it does not match.
